Hey guys! So here’s a little something I came across today. It’s a poem I stumbled upon that sparked a bit of a thought and gave me inspiration on my journey in the online world. The poem is called The Road Not Taken, it was written by Robert Frost and published in 1916. I wanted to share it with you, as things like this are worth sharing and you may take something from it as well.
If it’s not for you, then that’s cool, but it seems to be quite a famous poem (well at least the last three lines of it) and it might just open your mind up for some creative thought or inspiration. Something we all need at times when building our businesses.
So here’s the poem and I explain a little about what it meant to me and my journey afterwards.
The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
My Thoughts on the Poem
The most popular lines of this poem are the last three, where it talks about how taking the road less traveled has made all the difference. There is a lot of banter out there about people’s misinterpretation of the poem, or taking these lines out of context, but I’m going to ignore all that for now.
Why? Because I believe that any poem… or, phrase or quote for that matter… can mean whatever anyone feels it means to them. That is the beauty of art of this nature, as the meaning goes way beyond the original author’s interpretation (or intention) of it.
It’s just like a product you sell in business. It can mean something to someone, much more than the initial story you told about the product. Such as purchasing a toy boat for you dad, because it reminds him of the time he spent sailing with you when you were young.
A Metaphor for Our Journey to Escape the 9-5 Office
As many of us are exploring this direction of online business to ultimately escape the 9-5 office (me included), I like to think of it as choice between two significant roads. We are sort of at the point where these roads diverge, like in the poem.
The first road, a route along what’s currently considered the “traditional” pathway as an employee working for companies.
The second road, a direction along the online business pathway as an entrepreneur.
Both are ‘just as fair’, to earn money, survive and make your way through life. However, each is a different journey that result in very different experiences. Both bring uncertainty and unknown, which is exciting none-the-less.
I am Taking the Route Less Traveled By
And many of us are considering the same! We will be exploring something new and unknown to us individually, but it is definitely a road that has been taken by others before.
We can gather inspiration and courage from those ahead of us, and we aim to catch up with hard work and persistence…
And I Hope it Will Make All the Difference!
This pathway that we are on, often makes me think if I should be more concerned that it is a road less traveled by. However, I gain reassurance knowing that I am following my passion and dreams. I believe that one day (if not already), this road will become a way of life for many!

I hope this has provided some inspiration and provoked some thoughts. Please share your thoughts below, it will be great to read them!
